Pregnancy

If you are pregnant, you can refer yourself to a midwife. You do not usually need to see us first.

Urgent advice: Get help straight away if you are pregnant and have:

  • bleeding from your vagina
  • pain in your tummy
  • sickness so bad that you cannot keep fluids down, or you feel dizzy or unwell

If you are less than 16 weeks pregnant, call the Early Pregnancy Unit at Wythenshawe Hospital on 0161 291 2561. A specialist nurse will call you back.

If you are 16 weeks or more, call the maternity assessment unit at the hospital where you are booked to give birth. At Wythenshawe Hospital, call 0161 291 2724, 24 hours a day. Your midwife will give you the number for your hospital.

For anything else that is urgent, call 111. In an emergency, call 999 or go to A&E, and tell them you are pregnant.

Refer yourself to a midwife

Refer yourself as early as you can, ideally before you are 10 weeks pregnant. You can choose which hospital to have your care at.

Refer yourself for NHS pregnancy care (opens the NHS website)

To have your care at Wythenshawe Hospital, Saint Mary's Hospital or North Manchester General Hospital, you can also use the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust referral form (opens the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust website).

When to speak to a GP as well

Make an appointment with us soon after you find out you are pregnant if you have:

  • epilepsy
  • diabetes
  • a thyroid problem that you take medicine for
  • coeliac disease
  • sickle cell disease or thalassaemia
  • had a previous pregnancy affected by a neural tube defect, such as spina bifida
  • a BMI over 30 or under 18.5
  • a serious mental health condition
  • any medicine you take regularly

You may need a higher dose of folic acid, or a change to your medicines. Do not stop taking a prescribed medicine without talking to us first. You can still refer yourself to a midwife straight away.

You can also make an appointment if you would like to talk about anything to do with your pregnancy.

Who to contact during your pregnancy

  • Your midwife: for routine pregnancy care. You will get their number at your first (booking) appointment.
  • Us: for health problems not caused by your pregnancy, such as a urine infection or a skin problem. When we are closed, call 111.
  • The Early Pregnancy Unit or maternity assessment unit: for urgent pregnancy problems (see above).
  • 999 or A&E: for emergencies, such as chest pain or difficulty breathing.
